[Time corrected] Software Engineering for Bioinformatics: a Bioconductor Perspective - Kevin Rue-Albrecht, Software Sustainability Institute Fellow
[Car parking information update - please see below]
"As a recipient of the Software Sustainability Institute Fellowship (January 2026 - March 2027), I will describe my proposal for improving the visibility and reuse of software and training across research communities, drawing examples from my experience in the R/Bioconductor community as a user, developer, and through my community-facing roles in the Community Advisory Board, Code of Conduct committee, and various working groups. I aim to deliver an introductory overview of the Bioconductor project, highlighting aspects that have contributed to its thriving community and opportunities for new contributions." - Kevin

There is bicycle parking in Frideswide Square, and you can walk from there to enter through Lula's Ethiopian and Eritrean Cuisine: the event space is at the back of the restaurant. Alternatively, you can walk past Domino's and around the roadworks onto Becket Street, where an entrance directly to the event space is through an alley opposite the station car park (with a sign for "The Community Works"). If you reach the church walking South, you've gone too far.
This is very close to Oxford Railway Station.
The closest bus stops are Frideswide Square, Park End Street, and Oxford Rail Station. From them, follow the same instructions as above.
For cars, there is a car park by the ice rink on Oxpens road which you can pay for with a debit card onsite, around 550 metres away. There is also parking at the bottom of George Street.
(Closer, there is a privately-owned paid car park on Becket Street: Apcoa Oxford Station - Main. The physical signs (by Great Western Railway and Apcoa) say at the bottom that it's for rail users only - sorry I just noticed this today - but the website linked, by the car park organiser Apcoa, contradicts this and includes non-rail prices*. Due to roadworks you cannot drive directly from Frideswide Square onto Becket Street. For this last car park, most people will have to pay at https://apcoaconnect.com/. If you're a blue badge holder, you will need to register your vehicle with Apcoa if you want to park here free of charge: more guidance is here.)
Accessibility
The most accessible and direct entrance to the event space is on Becket Street - it can be reached by wheelchair from Becket Street or Frideswide Square (without having to take a detour like the cars do). This entrance is fairly accessible for wheelchairs/walkers and prams, with a clear width of at least 80cm (somewhat roughly with a ruler; let o@ogeer.org know if you would like specific dimensions). There is a ramp into the room, but the metal doorframe causes a small step of height 5.5cm, with an irregular top (the inside of the doorframe). There is an accessible toilet on the same level (the door should be locked or attended since it could be pulled open by force). The venue has apparently previously accommodated an electric wheelchair user.
*Please get in touch with o@ogeer.org if you have any questions; he can get to the site in person to assess it (except from 11:30-13:30).
